What a studio portrait actually is

A professional pet shoot is mostly about light. The photographer sets up a big soft key light to one side, a reflector to fill in the shadows and often a light behind to pick out the edge of the coat, then shoots on a high-resolution camera with a portrait lens. The result is a picture with shape and depth that a phone in the kitchen can't manage.

It's also notoriously hard with animals. Anyone who has tried to keep a spaniel on a backdrop for an hour knows why studio pet portraits cost what they do.

How our studio photo style looks

Our studio style recreates that setup: a medium-format camera and portrait lens, a large soft key light high to one side, a reflector and a soft rim light behind, with a round catchlight in the eyes. Detail is crisp across the face and falls off gently behind.

Out of the studio it becomes a photo shoot on location, lit by the scene's own light, so a golden-hour meadow looks like a meadow rather than a studio set.

Scenes it suits

Studio photo is the most true-to-life style, so it's the one to choose if you want them looking exactly like themselves. The plain portrait is the classic. On location it does Golden hour outdoors and Running in the park, mid-stride. It also makes a very smart Black tie portrait, a Birthday shoot and an excellent Passport photo.

Questions

Is it a real photograph?

Not a new one. It's a photo-style picture in the look of a professional studio shoot, made by an AI image model from the photo you upload. Nobody comes round with a camera, and it's ready in about a minute.

My photo is dark and a bit blurry. Will it work?

Often, yes: the new picture is lit properly however your photo was. But the likeness comes from your photo, so the clearer their face is in it, the more it looks like them. Our photo guide has quick tips.

Can I get a plain background for a profile picture?

The plain studio portrait has a simple backdrop, and the Passport photo scene is plainer still. Both are free to see.

What does it cost to try?

Nothing. Add a photo and you see the finished picture in about a minute, with no account and no card. Seeing it is free, and we'll email you the full-size file free too. You only pay if you choose a print, mug, card or other product.
