Why 35mm film still looks like home

35mm film is the strip of film in an ordinary roll camera. Leica made it popular for proper cameras in the 1920s, but for most families it means the 1980s and 1990s: a compact point-and-shoot, a pop-up flash, and a 24-exposure roll of colour film dropped at the chemist and collected a week later.

Those prints have a look nobody planned: warm, saturated colour, visible grain, the hard little shadow the flash throws behind whoever's in the picture. That's why the style is popular again; it looks like a real moment rather than a perfect one.

How our 35mm film style looks

Ours is that snapshot: warm consumer colour film, direct on-camera flash with a small catchlight in the eyes, grain and a soft vignette. We keep the eyes their true colour, with no red-eye or green glow.

It's a photo style, so costumes in it look like real shop-bought ones, photographed exactly as they are. That's what makes the Christmas and Halloween versions so funny: they look like they really happened.

Scenes it suits

Film is the style for family moments. A plain portrait looks like it fell out of an old album. The seasonal scenes are its home ground: Christmas in front of the tree, Halloween on the doorstep, a Birthday with a cake. The fun scenes, a Spaghetti dinner or a Road trip, look like holiday snaps.

Where 35mm film looks best

Questions

Is it a real photograph?

Not a new one. It's a photo-style picture in the look of a 1990s 35mm film snapshot, made by an AI image model from the photo you upload. Nobody comes round with a camera, and it's ready in about a minute.

Do I need an old photo for this?

No. Use any clear photo from your phone; the film look is added. A photo where you can see their face, taken in reasonable light, works best.

Will the costume look fake?

We aim for the opposite: costumes in the photo styles are meant to look like real shop-bought ones, creases and all. If one doesn't sit right, you'll see that free before you decide.

What does it cost to try?

Nothing. Add a photo and you see the finished picture in about a minute, with no account and no card. Seeing it is free, and we'll email you the full-size file free too. You only pay if you choose a print, mug, card or other product.
