The British habit of painting our animals
Oil paint, pigment ground in linseed oil, dries slowly, so a painter can blend, rework and build up thick texture. That's why it became the medium of serious portraits from the 1500s on.
Britain took animal portraits in oil more seriously than almost anywhere. George Stubbs painted racehorses with an anatomist's eye in the 1760s; his life-size Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery. In the nineteenth century Sir Edwin Landseer painted dogs for Queen Victoria and for half the country houses in England, and his Dignity and Impudence, a bloodhound and a small terrier side by side, belongs to Tate. When people say they'd like an oil painting of the dog, that's usually the look they mean.
How our oil painting style looks
Our oil style is in that nineteenth-century gallery register: real brush texture, softened edges, a warm light falling across the face and a background that sinks into shadow. It's a portrait of a real animal, not a cartoon.
It's also the style we open the In loving memory scene in, because it feels permanent and calm.
Scenes it suits
Oils suit almost anything, but they come into their own with the formal scenes: a classic sitting portrait, a Royal portrait, Black tie or a Knight in armour. The painted Christmas scene is a velvet Santa hat by firelight, in deep crimson, cream and holly green. And for remembering a pet, In loving memory is gentle and quiet.

Questions
Is it painted by hand?
No. It isn't painted by hand. It's painted-style: an AI image model makes it from your photo, so you see it in about a minute rather than waiting weeks for an artist. It's made to look like an oil painting, and it's printed, not painted, on whatever you order.
Is it printed on canvas?
No, we don't sell canvas. The framed print is on quality matte paper in a frame, ready to hang, which keeps the brushwork crisp and costs much less than a canvas.
Can I see it in oils and in another style before I choose?
Yes. Every style is free to see. Once your pet is painted in oils, you can try them in another style from the same photo and compare.
What does it cost to try?
Nothing. Add a photo and you see the finished picture in about a minute, with no account and no card. Seeing it is free, and we'll email you the full-size file free too. You only pay if you choose a print, mug, card or other product.
